12V 7AH battery as one of the most popular rechargeable battery in lead acid batteries, it has a wide application in our life. 12 volt 7ah battery is commonly used for powering medical equipment, security systems, UPS and other emergency systems, toys, alarm system, fish finders, weight scale, portable speaker, solar lighting, etc. Its application is so wide , even more often than many people know.

For a long time, 12V 7Ah batteries were built only as Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries. In recent years, deep cycle Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are offering great weight savings, much longer cycle life, faster charging etc.

12V 7AH battery size is international standard. Its size is 151 x 65 x 94 mm / 5.94 x 2.56 x 3.7 inches ((L x W x H)) . Battery 12v 7ah features a nominal voltage of 12V and a nominal (20h) capacity of 7Ah. It has two kinds terminals to choose. One is T1 terminal , its width (the contact towards the end narrows) is 187 inch, the other one is T2 terminal, its width (the contact towards the end narrows) is 250 inch . Most emergency light applications use a T1 terminal and most emergency power backup (UPS) applications use T2 terminals.

How to Charge a 12V 7AH Battery ?

Charging a 12v 7ah battery, we recommend to use a dedicated 12v7ah 20hr battery charger to charge it. If it is 7AH lithium battery, to use the dedicated lithium battery charger to charge it. Of course , except battery charger, we also have many other ways to charge them. For example, we could use solar panel to charge it.( How to Charge a Battery From Solar Panel) To protect the battery, you also need to use charge controllers between solar panel and batteries. An important thing is you need to make sure the output voltage and current is compatible with battery 12v 7ah . We advise the charge current is not more than 0.2C (battery capacity ) 

How Long Will a 12V 7Ah Battery Last?

In cycling applications, typical lead-acid batteries may last up to 200-300 cycles down to 100% DoD, while lithium batteries may last up to 2000+ cycles down to 100% DoD.

However, all this depends on numerous details, like charging/discharging currents, depth of discharge, temperatures, battery maintenance, and similar.

12V 7AH AGM Battery vs Lithium, Which One is Better?

It is hard to say agm battery is better than lithium battery, or lithium battery better than agm battery, they have their advantages and disadvantages separately , we could according to their feature to choose the most suitable one for us in application.

The differences between AGM and lithium battery , including :

SIZE AND WEIGHT

At the same capacity, lithium battery is much lighter . AGM batteries are 2-3x heavier than lithium batteries, for the same nominal capacity. Normally AGM battery have the same size if their capacity is the same even they produced by different factory. But lithium battery is different, it is customized product, Its size can be changed according to customer needs

LIFESPAN AND COSTS

Service life and warranty of lithium battery is much longer than agm battery , typical lead-acid batteries can last 3-5 years, while lithium batteries can last up to 10-12 years.

Budgets play a huge role in deciding which battery to get. With Lithium batteries being more expensive to begin with, it can seem like a no-brainer to go with an AGM. But what causes this difference? AGM batteries remain less expensive because the materials used to make them are inexpensive and widely available. Lithium batteries, on the other hand, use more expensive materials with some being harder to come by (i.e. lithium).

CHARGE AND DISCHARGE

– Lead acid battery can provide high currents for a short period of time, although high discharge currents decrease their actual capacity.
– Lithium batteries usually support constant discharge currents of up to 1C and surge currents up to 2C for a few seconds, but this differs from battery to battery.
– AGM batteries are sensitive to depth of discharge. This means the deeper the battery is discharged, the fewer cycles it has.

– While AGM batteries support 200-220 charging/discharging cycles down to 100% DoD and up to 250-300 cycles down to 80% DoD, lithium-ion batteries support up to 2000 (sometimes even more) charging/discharging cycles down to 100% DoD and up to 4000 (sometimes even more) charging/discharging cycles down to 80% DoD – lithium batteries support ~8-10x more cycles than lead-acid batteries.

AGM batteries are generally recommended to only be discharged to 50% of their capacity to maximize their cycle life. This limited depth of discharge (DOD) of 50% means that more batteries are required to achieve the desired capacity. This means more upfront costs, and more space needed to store them.
A lithium (LiFePO4) battery, on the other hand, is not affected much by depth of discharge so it boasts a much longer cycle life. Its DOD of 80-90% means fewer batteries are required to achieve the desired capacity. Fewer batteries mean less space needed to store them.

Lithium ion batteries are much more energy-efficient and when being discharged with 0.2C or similar currents, their output voltage is at least 12V during 90-95% of their discharge time – again, model dependent.

Sla 12V 7Ah batteries is better be charged by less than 1.4A currents, while most of the lithium 12V 7Ah batteries support charging currents of up to 1C, although 0.2C-0.3C charging currents are preferred.

TECHNOLOGY

While lithium batteries may have advantages, AGMs still have proven time-tested technology as they have been around much longer. AGM’s also have the upper hand when it comes to charging in freezing (below zero degrees Celsius) temperatures – albeit, with a bit of a hit to its efficiency. Unlike AGM’s, lithium batteries require temperature regulation for use in below-freezing temperatures.

SERIES AND PARALLEL

AGM batteries can be freely connected in series and/or parallel (it is recommended to use the very same batteries from the same brand, preferably from the same batch), while lithium batteries can be connected in series and/or parallel only if explicitly permitted by the manufacturer, and even then some limits may apply (again, model dependent).

SAFETY

AGM battery is safer, although lithium batteries has Battery Management Systems (BMS) inside to  protect the battery from unwanted events like high/low temperature, high/low voltage, short circuit, high charge/discharge current, etc. It still has risk to explode or catch fire by Improper operation.  while lead-acid batteries are much simpler in component and safe in usage.

SHIPMENT

AGM battery is easier to shipment. Lithium battery is considered dangerous goods  , When exported to foreign countries, it needs dangerous package. AGM battery is not belong to dangerous goods. It is easier to arrange shipment.

So, When to Use AGM and When to Use Lithium Batteries?

Absorbent Glass Mat battery should be used for applications where their weight is not of an issue, where the batteries don’t have to cycle very often, such as ups system, security system ect.

AGM batteries is suitable for applications where have a very stick demand about power safety . and they perform better in colder conditions.

Lithium batteries are lighter, more energy-efficient, feature higher actual capacity, especially in the 0.5-1.0C current range, they support a much larger number of charging/discharging cycles a lot (8-10x more than lead-acid batteries) and can be recharged faster.

Lithium ion batteries are also more expensive and may require dedicated lithium battery chargers, but in the long run, especially in cycling applications, lithium batteries are actually much cheaper.
