Proper handling and maintenance of lead acid batteries are essential to ensure safety, reliability, and long service life. Whether you are using a sealed lead acid battery, a VRLA battery, a front terminal battery, a gel battery, or a deep cycle battery, following these scientifically established safety regulations will help prevent accidents and optimize performance.

1. Pre-Use Inspection

  • Upon delivery, inspect the outer packaging for any signs of damage or mishandling.

  • When the battery arrives at the installation site, open the packaging and visually check the battery appearance for any leakage, cracks, or deformation.

  • Verify that the number of batteries matches the order and that all battery accessories, such as terminal bolts and washers, are complete.

2. Installation and Handling

  • Do not install or operate batteries in confined spaces or near open flames, sparks, or ignition sources.

  • Avoid installing batteries in areas prone to flooding or moisture accumulation.

  • During installation and transport, do not apply excessive force to the battery terminals.

  • Do not cover batteries with vinyl film or other materials that may generate static electricity, as this could lead to sparking or explosion.

  • Operating temperature range: Do not use batteries in environments below -40°C or above 50°C. For high-temperature applications, please use a specialized high-temperature battery series.

  • When connecting multiple batteries in series, ensure correct polarity and maintain a minimum spacing of 15mm between units for adequate ventilation.

  • Always wear insulated protective gloves when handling batteries. When using metal tools such as torque wrenches, insulate the tool handles to prevent accidental short circuits across the positive and negative terminals.

  • For batteries with plug-in terminals, do not alter the terminal shape or position. If modifications are required, contact the manufacturer.

  • For bolt-type terminals, use the supplied washers and tighten to a torque of 11.3 N·m to ensure secure battery terminal connection.

  • Before connecting to external equipment, confirm the equipment is powered off and disconnected. Double-check polarity, then connect the battery positive to the equipment positive and the battery negative to the equipment negative.

  • When using batteries in parallel, do not exceed three strings unless approved by the manufacturer.

3. Charging and Discharging Guidelines

Proper battery charging voltage is critical for maintaining battery health and preventing premature failure.

Recommended Charging Voltages (per cell):

  • Cycle use: 2.40–2.50V, with initial current not exceeding 0.3C(A)

  • Standby / float use: 2.23–2.30V

  • When ambient temperature falls below 15°C or rises above 35°C, adjust the charging voltage by ±3mV per cell per degree Celsius.

  • For first-time use, perform an initial charge at a low current to properly activate the battery.

  • If the battery has experienced a deep discharge, a prolonged charging period is necessary to restore full capacity.

4. Routine Maintenance

For reliable battery performance and extended service life, perform the following checks every three months:

  • Verify that the total voltage of the battery pack matches the specified value.

  • Measure ambient temperature and battery surface temperature.

  • Record individual cell voltages to identify imbalances.

  • Inspect all connecting wires and terminals for tightness; retighten if necessary.

  • Check for any visible abnormalities in battery appearance, such as swelling or corrosion.

  • Ensure battery terminal connections are clean and free of oxidation.

Replace the lead acid battery and contact the manufacturer if any of the following occur:

  • Cracked or ruptured battery case

  • Visible battery leakage

  • Cell voltage exceeding 15V, or significant deviation in average voltage

  • Localized overheating of a single battery

5. Safety Precautions

  • Do not immerse batteries in water or expose them to fire.

  • Do not disassemble or modify the battery in any way.

  • Avoid mixing batteries of different brands, capacities, voltage ratings, or ages in series or parallel configurations.

  • Keep batteries out of reach of children during installation, use, and storage.

  • Always wear insulated gloves when handling battery packs or making connections.

  • Lead acid batteries contain sulfuric acid. If the battery casing is mechanically damaged and acid contacts skin, clothing, or eyes, flush immediately with large amounts of clean water and seek medical attention promptly.

6. Lead Acid Battery Storage Recommendations

  • Store batteries in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.

  • For long-term battery storage, perform three low-current charge/discharge cycles to restore full capacity before putting the battery back into service.

  • Do not store large quantities of batteries in a fully charged or partially charged state in dense packaging without adequate ventilation.

  • Always store batteries in a location inaccessible to children.
